On the right bank of the Vltava on Rašín Embankment near Jirásek Bridge, your eye is caught by an unusual modern building artfully integrated into the original historic surroundings. This is the so-called Dancing House, also known as Ginger and Fred, built in 1996. It stands on Rašín Embankment at Jirásek Bridge.
Not everyone today knows that the building's name is inspired by the famous interwar dancing duo Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. It is the first work of the world-class architects Frank O. Gehry and Vlado Milunić built in Prague after the Velvet Revolution. For its time it was a bold project that placed modern architecture in a traditional urban setting and unleashed a wide-ranging public discussion of Prague architecture.
Despite the heated discussions and frequent rejection, the Dancing House has won numerous awards at home and abroad, including recognition in the design category in a poll by the American magazine Time. The building today houses mainly offices, a luxury café and a quality restaurant.
The Dancing House can make a great backdrop for a Prague by Night dinner cruise, as well as for your wedding photos if you choose to have your wedding on one of our boats.
