Lesser Town Embankment

Lesser Town Embankment (Malostranské nábřeží) is fairly short but very busy with tourists. It is a picturesque stretch of embankment running from Legion Bridge to Sovovy Mlýny on Kampa Island.

One section is in stone, formed by a row of residential houses. They were built between 1887 and 1888 by the well-known architect Josef Schulz, commissioned by the entrepreneur Jindřich Jechenthal. The other section is essentially a reinforced Vltava bank covered with grass and a path.

The embankment was originally meant to continue further and connect with Kosárek Embankment. As part of the embankment-regulation works, the Devil's Channel was also to be filled in. Fortunately these early-20th-century plans were not carried out, mainly thanks to the For Old Prague club, which campaigned to preserve the original character of Kampa and the Lesser Town.

The embankment has been called Lesser Town Embankment since 1905.

You'll see the Lesser Town Embankment best on our longer cruises, such as the Prague Grand Cruise.
