Rowers' Island

Rowers' Island (Veslařský ostrov) follows Podolí Embankment along the right bank, opposite Imperial Meadow. A concrete bridge connects it with the right bank of the Vltava. The intake for the nearby Podolí Waterworks is located here.

The island is mentioned in the records as early as 1420. It was created mainly by the deposition of sand when ice occasionally blocked the river bed at the narrowing near Žluté Lázně. Notably, the island was also in the past artificially extended by sinking a cargo boat to speed up sediment build-up.

The Schwarzenbergs set up a small port for log rafts and a timber depot here for wood logged in the Šumava mountains. As the importance of timber rafting declined, the island gradually became a sports harbour, from which it takes its name.

Today it is mainly home to clubhouses, boathouses and other water-sports facilities for Vltava sailing, canoeing and rowing.

We can take you alongside Rowers' Island for example during the Prague Grand Cruise or during the dinner cruise.
